In 2007, we celebrated the centenary of the arrival of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa in Burundi (on 19.10.1906). Today we live in the city of Gitega.
Gitega, the Archdiocese and second largest city of Burundi, is located in the center of the country. The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa arrived for the first time in the Nyamugari district in 1988, after the 1987 evictions which forced them to leave all their communities in Burundi.
We are inserted in this neighborhood with a large number of Muslims. Many people, especially women, live in extreme poverty. The sister-nurses work in Our Lady of Africa Health Center. A special focus is on care and monitoring people living with HIV/AIDS.
The community welcomes Burundian girls who want to learn more about our congregation.
We have Burundian sisters sent to Zambia, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ghana, DR Congo, Rwanda and also in Burundi.
Our desire is to help people take charge of themselves. Our contribution: to care for the sick and to give witness of openness through our international community.
"To be all things to all."
